Well, it is the last week of 2012 for us.  We will celebrate with our holiday party on Friday, December 21, at 1:00.  We will be taking time to visit the 5th grade Exhibition on Wednesday morning and will spend our final days on the Explorer project.  Most students are in the final stages of their rough draft and will begin to write their final draft Monday and will present Tuesday-Friday.  Everyone will work on the same spelling list this week with a theme of Holiday words.  No Wordly Wise this week!  Other things we will be doing:

Math- We are continuing on with Unit 5, multiplication. Our focus will be on continuing with partial products to multiply multi-digit numbers. We will also look at reading and writing big numbers (millions and billions). We also have some fun, educational crafts students can make using math terms (circumference, diameter, geometrical shapes). They can create elves, snowmen, or a winter scene.

Reading- In reading we will finish any lessons on similes and metaphors.

Writing- Students will be given a prompt and asked to plan, write a rough draft, and write a final draft so we can gauge how they are doing with all they’ve learned in expository writing. They will also participate in a fun and “complimentary” writing activity.

Science- We will learn all about the sun next week. We are focusing on the recognizable patterns in the natural world among the sun and Earth. We are also focusing on some of the ways that our sun affects Earth.

Social Studies- Last week we learned about Native American tribes in Texas and next week our focus will be learning about all of the different European explorers who explored Texas and the Western Hemisphere and what their reasons for exploration were. Our explorers of focus will be Christopher Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, and Rene-Robert Cavelier. There will be an open book quiz from the Social Studies workbook.

IB planner- We are just about finished with the Explorer planner. Many students are writing their final drafts and those who are finished with final drafts are creating storyboards so they can begin their online Photo Story movie project about their explorer. They are really enjoying this.
