This week finds us taking HISD mandated Benchmarks, beginning with Writing on Monday, Reading on Tuesday, and finishing with Math on Thursday. Students will be given 4 hours to complete each. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest and eats a healthy breakfast. These are used to determine areas to focus on as we prepare for the STAAR and Stanford exams in the spring. No Benchmarks on Wednesday because it is an early dismissal.
We spent all day Wednesday on Ipads working on our National Symbols ebooks. Students were allowed to pick from one of 4 symbols (the US Flag, Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, or Bald Eagle) and research information which they then used to create their books. Other things we will be working on as we head to Thanksgiving Break are:
Math- In math next week we spend some time reviewing subtraction with regrouping. Students are still struggling here, especially with subtraction across zeros. For example 900-758.
Reading- In reading we continue our Daily 5 rotations, read Weekly Reader, and finish up inferencing work.
Writing- When time allows, students will continue to work on their expository pieces. Our grammar focus next week is nouns- common and proper.
Science- In Science we are finishing up our lessons on the ecosystems, as well as producers, consumers, and decomposers.
Social Studies – We will learn about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights next week. The students will also be completing a summative study guide for the Social Studies summative test that will be given before we get out for Thanksgiving break. This will be a great resource to use in preparation. Also, look for information about our upcoming Explorers project we will be doing after Thanksgiving.
