Hi Parents,

I hope you're enjoying the Labor Day Holiday.  We will be back at school tomorrow with a full week of learning ahead.  I do my very best to get all work graded each weekend and send it home in the Tuesday folder.  This week's agenda:

Writing- In writing, we will focus on finding small moments in our lives that we can turn into stories. We will read lots of books to help get our ideas flowing as well as see lots of teacher modeling. We will focus on small moments involving people, places, and objects that are important to us.
Math- In math this week we begin the Everyday Math curriculum. Our first unit is in geometry. This week we will focus on angles (right, acute, obtuse), identifying parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines, and identifying attributes of two and three dimensional geometric figures. There is a lot of important vocabuluar in Unit 1.
Reading- Our focus in reading this week is genres! The students will explore different types of literature (fiction, nonfiction) to become more familiar with the subcategories in each genre. They will also learn more strategies that good readers use while reading - checking for understanding and cross checking.
Science- In science this week we will demonstrate safe practices and the use of safety equipment. Students will have a chance to look at the science tools and determine what each tool is used for in the lab.
Social Studies- In social studies this week we continue to work on map skills. We will focus on reading a map key/legend, looking at map scale, and longitude and latitude.
