Hi Parents,

Thursday we head to Austin; you will receive a note in the Tuesday folder with all of the final details you need to know.  I will also put it in this blog and email, too.  But Austin isn't our only focus this week--

Math- We continue Unit 7 in math. Our focus this week is equivalent fractions. Students will learn how to identify equivalent fractions as well as generate them. They will also learn how to rename fractions as decimals and to understand the relationship between both.

Reading- This week we are focusing on point of view. Students will learn about first and third person and be able to read a short passage from a novel and identify whether it’s written in first or third person point of view and how they know this. Students will also look at task cards with short exerts written on them and determine which point of view it’s written in.

Writing- Students will continue to write to a prompt. We are seeing nice improvements in their writing and it’s great for them to really get used to the full writing process and build stamina as well. They are also being exposed to many different prompts. Our focus next week is expository. Our grammar focus is complete sentences vs. fragments. We still see many students writing fragments and it’s a habit we need to break.

Social Studies- We continue reading chapter 7 and focusing on Texas joining the U.S. as well as the boundary disputes this caused  between Mexico and the U.S.

Science- Our focus this week will be climate change, global warming, and the Greenhouse Effect. We will discuss how all three of these play a role on Earth.

Austin news

The kids are SO excited about Austin.  I wanted to send you one last update.

It is imperative that your child be here by 6:30.  The buses will pull out exactly at 6:45.  We cannot hold the buses up for late students as it will mess up the schedule for the entire day. Everyone will sign in with me to get their bus assignment and name tags.   Our class will line up in the main hall near the reception area.

If you are chaperoning for us, I will ask that you wait until your all of your group has arrived before boarding.  This is so you can meet the students you will be in charge of watching for the day.  We are fortunate in that we have a good number of adults going with us so everyone will have no more than 3 students to watch over. We will spend most of the day together as one group. You will simply need to keep tabs on your students as we move from place to place.  I will have more details for you in your chaperone packet Thursday morning.

In the event of rain, you may send a raincoat with your child but no umbrellas please.  They will not be allowed in the Capitol and we enter through one entrance and exit on the complete opposite side, so leaving it at the door isn’t an option. Chance of rain is only 30% and looks like it will start around 1:00 so we should be fine.

A few kid questions that have come up in other classes:
-Ipads-to bring or not to bring.  I personally would not send my child with such expensive equipment.  Should something happen to it, you would need to take it up with the bus company.  We are not liable for any lost or stolen items.
-camera-yes.  I am suggesting to the students that it be small and fit into a pocket when in the Capitol and museum as pictures are not allowed in those places.
-food-yes.  The kids can bring any snacks they wish.  I am asking for no Cheetos.  Orange fingers tend to be cleaned off on the bus seats. A lot of kids come with their breakfast in hand and eat on the bus. We will have bottles of water and a light snack for your child for the ride home.
-money for the gift shop-we would like the students to spend their time touring the museum rather than the gift shop,so we ask that no money be sent.

Please be sure all of your child’s “stuff” fits into one backpack.

Please be sure to your child is wearing their red Roberts shirt.  Chaperones, if you have a red shirt, it would be great if you could wear it as well.  Please don’t go out and buy one though. J Wear comfortable walking shoes;  we will be doing quite a bit.
