This week's focus:
Math- We continue working through Unit 6. Our focus is still division at this point. It is vital your child knows their facts well. They’ve learned a few different ways to solve division problems, including the traditional method and partial quotients. Next week will take the time to ensure students are understanding division and division word problems. We will also do several logic extensions.
Writing- We continue to write narrative pieces and focus on varying our sentence structure by using a technique called flip the subject. We will also focus on strategies for working through revising and editing passages. For the next few months we will write a mix of expository and narrative pieces throughout the week. We don’t want to continue singling out each type. Students need to be given prompts, be able to decide which type it is, and really get lots of writing practice in. Our grammar focus is verbs.
Reading- We are moving into summarizing next week. This is an extremely important skill. We use the five finger method (Somebody Wanted But So Then) or the 5 W’s (Who, What, Where, When,Why). We have already taught main idea and now it’s time for students to be able to read a passage and summarize it using the one of the above methods, which will be taught next week.
Social Studies- The chapter 5 social studies test will be given next week.
Science – We continue working in our going green planner. Our focus next week is on renewable and nonrenewable resources as well as the importance of conservation. We will discuss humans affects on the environment with readings, a visualization activity, and teaching about the various renewable and nonrenewable resources. There will be a quiz during the week.
