Math-
The end of Unit 1 math test will be given on Tuesday of next week. We will review before the test. Next week we will be looking at the various ways in which numbers are used in math as well as in our world. We will also look at equivalent names for whole numbers and place value in whole numbers, up to one million. Writing- We continue with personal narrative and learn the difference between retelling or summarizing a small moment and actually writing it as a story. We also look at how to elaborate critical elements in our story so that the reader can create a movie in his/her mind. Adding details to our stories is another lesson we will work on next week. We are striving hard to have focused and well elaborated pieces. We will also begin grammar this week and our focus will be subjects and predicates. Reading- We continue with our planner, The Heart of the Story as we read the novel Tiger Rising in class. This week we will identify and analyze character traits through a variety of lessons, including looking at a list of character traits and citing examples of certain traits we find the characters displaying in the Tiger Rising. We will also reinact scences from the novel and guss which characters are being portrayed based on the traits we see in the skit. The students will also create an illustration of a character trait. Science- We continue to study matter. This week our focus is measuring matter. We will learn about measuring, comparing and contrasting physical properties of matter including size, mass, volume, density. Social Studies- In Social Studies, we continue in the text book reading and learning about the natural resources people use to meet basic needs and how Texans can help conserve natural resources. We will also look at how the temperature and precipitation of Texas vary from region to region.
