Greetings Parents! Welcome to 4th grade. The first week of school was dedicated to labeling and sorting school supplies, establishing classroom procedures and expectations, reviewing from 3rd grade, and preparing for 4th grade curriculum and skills. Writing is a major focus of 4th grade and we are already underway with Writer's Workshop. In math, we are reviewing/reinforcing place value and multiplication facts. In reading, we will be implementing The Daily 5 approach and CAFE. The Daily 5 focuses on reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, work on writing, and word work. CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary) will target specific areas to strengthen reading skills. Students will have a "menu" of strategies to choose from to assist them in improving their reading and is designed to customize a student's needs. After Labor Day we will begin the Everydaymath curriculum and our first IB Planner "Going Green."

Open House is Thursday, Sept. 1 from 6:00-7:00. I will be going over policies, procedures, grading, and homework expectations. This information will be posted on the blog following Open House. Something I would like to stress now is the importance of keeping up with the Wordly Wise assignments, studying spelling words nightly, and the automaticity of multiplication facts. Also, a reading log will be coming home this week with the expectation students read at least 30 minutes daily.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday. I am truly enjoying the world of 4th grade!
